With only three ingredients, M&M Pretzel Treats are one of those no-bake confections that can be made in just a few minutes. It requires very little clean up, and you can change up the colours and flavours quite easily. Be sure to add these to your Christmas Eve treat table!

The first time I made these M&M Pretzel Treats was back in 2016. I don’t make them too often, and when I do, it’s usually around Christmas time. Actually, I did make them for Valentine’s Day and used red and pink candies for the tops. They were quite cute! When I make these, I make a huge batch, and will oftentimes fill in the gaps in my giveaway cookie boxes with them.
I have to use them up fast, because in our home, John.e will eat M&M candies for breakfast! You think I’m joking, but I’ve seen it happen! I have a cabinet in our kitchen that is totally dedicated to my baking supplies. I keep flour, sugar, baking soda and things like that in the pantry. But, in this one cabinet, I keep things like pretzels, M&Ms, Hershey Kisses, chocolate chips, etc. Both John.e and McKenna know that the cabinet is off limits at all times! It’s the only way I can keep things from being eaten before I get the chance to bake with them.
When it comes to candy-coated chocolate like M&Ms or even Cadbury Mini Eggs, I do buy more than I need though, so they do end up with some to snack on. Sometimes, I swear these bags of candy are thrown against the wall in some grocery stores, because the candy is all chipped off of the chocolate. I always buy an extra bag so I can at least salvage enough to make whatever it is I’m making at the time. Does that mean I’m always expecting the worse? Ha!

M&M PRETZEL TREATS
I’ve seen recipes like this for years; and for every season. But, it wasn’t until John.e and I took my daughter to Hershey Park in Pennsylvania a few summers ago, that I realized something rather important. I don’t care for Hershey’s chocolate in its natural state – meaning that I can’t unwrap a Hershey chocolate bar or peel the foil off of a Hershey Kiss and pop it into my mouth. I don’t like Hershey’s chocolate like that. (I’m a Cadbury fan!)
But, Dear Reader, if the Hershey chocolate is baked into something, like a cookie, or combined with something, like these little pretzels, then game on! I can eat until I literally get sick. (Never happened!) And, I love how easy and cute these are; you only need three ingredients and 4 minutes. There’s no need for a mixing bowl or dirtying up a bunch of dishes. A simple baking sheet is all you need. And if you’re smart, line that baking sheet with parchment paper, and you’ve just eliminated the clean up!

INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR THIS RECIPE:
- Pretzels – You will need to use mini pretzels for this recipe. As you can see, I used the mini squares, but you can use the mini pretzels with the traditional knot shape, or you can use the round pretzels too.
- Hershey Chocolate Kisses – You will need one chocolate kiss for every pretzel base.
- M&Ms – Any candy-coated chocolate will do, just use one that is festive like red and green M&Ms!

HOW TO MAKE M&M PRETZEL TREATS
First, preheat your oven to 250 degrees F. While the oven is heating, line a baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the pretzels evenly without allowing them to overlap or touch. Next, unwrap each Hershey Kiss and place one in the center of each pretzel. It’s always a good idea to buy more chocolates than you need, because you’re bound to eat one or two. And, because unwrapping each individual chocolate is a pain, if you have kids, ask them to help. They will love it!
Once all of the pretzels are topped with chocolate, place the baking sheet in the oven on the middle rack for exactly 4 minutes. Once done, remove the tray from the oven and immediately place a red or green M&M onto the chocolate and slightly press the candy into the chocolate. This will ensure that the candy sticks to the confection.
Allow the chocolate to cool completely before transferring it to a bowl or a cellophane bag. I highly recommend that you allow these to cool at room temperature. Sometimes, if you refrigerate melted chocolate, it will cool too quickly which will force the milk solids in the chocolate to separate. That’s when you will get that unappealing white streaky mess on your chocolate. It looks like powder or residue. It’s completely harmless, but not pretty. Allowing the chocolate to harden slowly is the best route.

CHANGE THE FLAVOUR!
The pretzel base is a pretzel base and there’s not much you can do about that. And, really, why would you want to change it? Pretzels are so good with chocolate. I love that sweet and salty combination! But, the Hershey Kiss Chocolate is fair game. You can easily change that up and completely change the flavour of your M&M Pretzel Treats.
Classic milk chocolate is always a win, but you can’t go wrong with the red and white striped type. I think they call them hugs. You can get the milk and white chocolate stripes too. I would also consider using dark mint chocolate kisses. If I did that, I would use the mint M&Ms to go with it. In our home, you can never have too much mint flavour!
Changing the flavour can also coincide with changing the theme. For example, you could use the cookie dough kisses and top them with different colour M&Ms or, if you’re in Canada, Smarties! They would be great for a birthday party. I would also consider using pumpkin spice kisses and using orange and brown candy-coated chocolates for fall or Halloween.

CANDIES, CANDIES, AND MORE CANDIES!
I know I’ve talked mostly about M&Ms, but there are other candy-coated chocolates out there that you can use. Here in Canada, we have something called Smarties. I think in the United States, smarties are those flat, pressed-powder-like candy that comes in a cellophane-wrapped rolls. They’re often found in large bags for Halloween treats. In Canada, smarties are a candy-coated chocolate much like the popular M&M.
You might also consider using Cadbury Mini Eggs – they are my all-time favourite! They release bags at Christmastime with red and green candy-coated mini eggs. Although, in comparison to Hershey’s Eggies, Cadbury Mini Eggs are quite muted. Hershey’s brand has very bright and vivid red and green colours.

STORING, PACKAGING, & FREEZING
When it comes to most no-bake confections, they taste best at room temperature, but they don’t hold up well to being left out on your countertop for long periods of time. Some of them will stay fresh in a cookie jar or food-safe container with a lid for 3-5 days if left to sit on your kitchen countertop. But, others most certainly will not! If in doubt, store them in a food-safe container in your fridge. When you want one, two, or half a dozen, take them out of the container and place them in a single layer on a plate. Let them sit at room temperature for 5 minutes and they’re ready!
Most no-bake confections are made without the need to freeze them for long periods of time, but they can be frozen. For this recipe, I have tested whether or not they can be frozen, and they certainly can! Once they are completely hardened, pile them into a clean, food-safe container. The container must be freezer friendly! You’ll want to ensure a very tight-fitting lid too. I use these quite often when freezing baked goods. I like to place a sheet of plastic wrap over the top of the container before pushing the lid on. This helps to create a better seal. The goal is to keep all of that freshness locked in!
You can freeze these for up to three months. If you plan to give previously frozen confections as a gift, lay them out onto a wire cooling rack in a single layer to thaw out. Condensation might form and that’s normal. Giving them space to breathe by not overlapping them will help to eliminate that. Once thawed, pile into cellophane bags and tie with a ribbon, or stack in a cookie tin/box.

I make these using a Rolo candy instead of a candy kiss because I love caramel. But both ways are delicious.

The Hershey kiss does not stay on the pretzel. I don’t think it has melted into the pretzel to stay together, even though we press it

Hi May – it sounds to me like the chocolate is not softening while in the oven. Try leaving the chocolate on the pretzel and baking it for five minutes instead of 4. Sometimes, ovens greatly vary in the amount of heat being generated.

I also made these with peppermint kisses and would recommend reducing the time in the oven by about a minute as they melt very quickly.

These chocolate delights are the perfect thing to bring to a party especially around the holidays. Something everyone will like and something that will go quickly! These are a great addition to any event.
Rosanne Terzian says
I love these but I use chocolate candy wafers that you can buy from a craft store. They are flat discs and in my opinion the chocolate is superior to Hershey’s. You only need 3 minutes in the oven.
Fern K says
Love these HOWEVER even after letting them cool for hours on the counter the chocolate turns white after a couple days ! I’ve stored them in airtight containers at room temperature or refrigerated them, but get same result! HELP!!!
