Assemble this Halloween Snack Bowl and friends can help themselves to a tasty treat at your party, or scoop the mixture into cellophane bags and tie them up with a festive ribbon. A homemade treat like this would be much more appreciated by your local trick or treaters!

All the way back in 2018, I shared two recipes here at Lord Byron’s Kitchen that celebrated the ease of putting together a festive and fun party snack mix, much like this Halloween Snack Bowl. Those two, however, were Christmas-themed. I really do think that these are the types of snacks that people love to eat at a casual get together – you know the type – a birthday party, a movie or games night, or even an occasion a little more special, like Easter or Halloween!
The two Christmas snacks I spoke of are my Christmas Eve Sweet Snack Mix, which uses peanut butter in the chocolate mixture, and also uses shreddies cereal rather than chex. Secondly, there’s my Christmas Eve Savoury Snack Mix, which is my favourite, because I tend to go for salty and savoury over chocolaty and sweet treats. I also made an Easter version!
When I first thought about posting this recipe, my immediate thought was I’ve done that already. But, not quite. I wanted to show you how easy it is to switch up a few ingredients in a recipe to make it new and exciting all over again. It proves, once again, that a recipe like this can be used at any time, and can be altered or adjusted to suit the occasion. Note how inviting and festive this Halloween Snack bowl looks! And, it’s so easy to make too!

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL NEED FOR THIS RECIPE:
- Mini Shreddies – This is a Canadian breakfast cereal. I’m not sure if it’s available outside Canada. If not, a great substitute would be Rice Chex cereal.
- Butter – Use salted butter. The saltiness will help to balance out the sweetness.
- Semi Sweet Chocolate – Milk chocolate is too sweet, so use the semi sweet type. You can use the baking bars or chocolate chips.
- Vanilla Extract – It is wonderful with chocolate!
- Sprinkles – I used just a regular Halloween-themed ball type, but you can use any sprinkles you want.
- Confectioner’s Sugar – This coats the wet melted chocolate and prevents everything from sticking together or clumping.
- Candy Corn – What is Halloween without candy corn?
- Mellocreme Pumpkins – If you can’t find these, any marshmallow-type Halloween-themed candy will do.
- Pretzels – Salted pretzels add flavour and crunch too!
- Mini Peanut Butter Cups – Leave this out or substitute with another confection if worried about peanut allergies.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN HALLOWEEN SNACK BOWL:
Getting this bowl of deliciousness to the point where you can serve it comes in two steps. The first thing you want to do is to coat the mini shreddies cereal with melted chocolate. Then, once that is set up, comes the fun part. You get to pile the shreddies and all of the other ingredients into a big bowl, and then toss to combine and mix.
So, let’s talk about getting the shreddies ready first. The first thing to do is to measure out your cereal and place it into a large bowl. Make sure the bowl is big enough to stir and toss when the time comes. Next, add the chocolate, butter, and vanilla extract to a microwave-safe bowl. In increments of 30 seconds, and with the microwave on half power, melt the ingredients together. Be sure to stir well with a rubber spatula between every increment.
When the mixture is all melted, pour it over the cereal you have previously measured out into that large bowl. Using your spatula, stir the chocolate into the cereal until every piece of cereal is coated. Next, add the sprinkles and stir once again to distribute. Finally, add the confectioner’s sugar and toss to cover all of the cereal. Spread this mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Leave it alone until the chocolate has firmed up and dried – about 2 hours.

ASSEMBLING THE BOWL
This is how I like to put the whole thing together to avoid getting things too messy. You know how messy confectioner’s sugar can be to work with! Transfer the cereal to a large bag and add in all of the candy, chocolates, and pretzels. Gently shake to mix everything together.
Finally, pour the mixture into a serving bowl and set it out with a little scoop and some small bowls or bags. This will encourage everyone to help themselves to a sweet little snack. Any leftovers will keep for about a week or so. And, finally, as you can see from the photos, the contents of your Halloween Snack Bowl can be packed into cellophane bags and tied with a ribbon. They make great treats for trick or treaters, or even a nice goodie bag for guests to take home with them!
