SAVOURY TEA PARTY SANDWICHES
Let’s face it, for most of us, springtime brunches with friends, family gatherings on Mother’s Day, and backyard barbecues on Father’s Day are out of the question this year. Here in Canada, we are presently still in lockdown, so everyone is missing out on spending time with the ones they love. The purpose of this Savoury Tea Party Sandwiches post is to encourage you to break the monotony and do something special.
I don’t know about you, but when it comes to celebrations, I make every effort to make sure it’s as normal as possible, even if it’s just the three of us celebrating together. You might not be able to visit your family, but you can certainly drop off goodies at their doorstep. I created these Savoury Tea Party Sandwiches with that in mind.
These are so easy to prepare, so make a bunch and package them up and drop them off to your friends and family. Pack at least three or four sandwiches per person. Maybe add some fresh fruit and a few sweet treats to the package too. And, be sure to include packets of tea or a thermos of prepared hot tea. Your friends and family will be so grateful!

HOW TO PREPARE A TEA PARTY
I read so many blog posts on this! You can find some really wacky ideas out there and even though they seem fun, I wasn’t about to break the bank. The goal of an afternoon tea party should be this – delicious finger foods, a hot beverage, and good company.
When it comes to hot beverages, you can serve tea or coffee. To be honest, even though this is all about a tea party, I’m a coffee drinker and that’s exactly what I had in my cup. If you have a tea set, dig it out and dust it off. Use the sugar bowl and the creamer too. Set it all up and make it look fancy!
Prepare enough sandwiches so that each person at your party can have at least three or four. They are small, so you will want to make sure everyone has their fill. For the purpose of the photos you see in this post, I did set up a tea set and plated all of the sandwiches on platters. We are in the middle of a lockdown, so I did not run out to purchase fresh fruit or sugary treats. We have a 35-minute drive to the nearest well-stocked grocery store, so I skipped it completely.
The goal of a tea party is to relax with some nibbles and tea, while you chat with your significant other and/or your kids. Everyone can put down their phones and put away any other devices or electronics for an hour or so. Sit together and talk about whatever you feel like talking about. Just enjoy each other’s company for a little while.
CHOOSING SANDWICHES
There are hundreds of tea party sandwich ideas out there. But, of course, you can’t make them all. Pick a few of them – the ones that you know your family will enjoy and prepare only those. I chose to prepare one classic tea party sandwich, which is the cucumber sandwich. Then, I prepared one open-faced sandwich with dill and radish slices. That one was delicious!
Lastly, I prepared one sandwich with meat. I chose to use Italian-style deli meats because they hold up well to sitting at room temperature. In fact, meats like prosciutto or salami taste better when at room temperature.
All of these sandwich recipes are prepared pretty much the same way. Choose a bread that you like. It might be a good idea to use different loaves of bread for variety. I used a baguette for the meat sandwich, thinly sliced white bread for the cucumber sandwich, and dark rye for the radish sandwich. You can prepare the base or the spread the night before to make things faster and easier when assembling the sandwiches too.
LET’S TALK ABOUT PLATING
In most cases, a tea party will display the food on those tall, tiered platters. I have three of those, but I didn’t use them. Because of the fact that John.e is a vegetarian, I did not want to place the meat sandwiches anywhere near the vegetarian sandwiches. Also, if I’m being honest, I hate taking the tiers apart to wash them up! I opted for plain white platters, which allow the sandwiches to be the main focus.
If you’re going to host a tea party, you should have access to a tea set and tea cups. I have a small collection of tea cups that were given to me by friends, but they are not a complete set. However, I do have a green set, complete with sugar and cream bowls, a teapot, and four teacups with saucers, so I used that set.
A tea set can be expensive, so if you don’t have a complete set, make it work with what you have. Now that I think about it, a tea party with mismatched teacups would be quite lovely! I purchased the green set you see in the photos on Amazon. They’re beautiful, although, be warned that the green colour you see on Amazon is not what you will get. The colour is much lighter.
I’ll mention here too that you will need napkins. Can you use paper napkins? Sure! But, most of us have cloth napkins stashed in a buffet cabinet somewhere. Get them out and wash them to freshen them up. I believe that if you can’t use the “special stuff for company” with your own family, then you shouldn’t have it. Right!?
THE SANDWICHES
There are three recipes in this post, and I have written each one of them up in their own recipe card. That way, it’s easier to just pick the ones you like and focus on only those. Each one will have its own set of ingredients, but keep in mind that if you make one of these, you might have enough leftover ingredients to make the next one too.
Each of the recipes lists enough ingredients to make between eight to ten sandwiches. If you need more, you can easily double the recipes. And, obviously, if you need less, you can halve the ingredients too!
