If you cannot decide whether you want a hot dog, a burrito, or a taquito for dinner, then you should just have all three in one! Bean and Cheese Hotdog Taquitos are prepared by rolling a tortilla with refried black beans, shredded cheese, and a hotdog. Grill until golden and crispy. Serve with your favourite dippers!

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while now, you might have read about my first experience with a taquito. Since then, I have been a little obsessed with them. These Bean and Cheese Hotdog Taquitos are my newest take on the popular taquito.
I am calling this recipe Bean and Cheese Hotdog Taquitos. I know it is not an overly creative name, but that’s exactly how I describe the dish! Let me break it down for you. Remember when I said it was a hotdog, a burrito, and a taquito all rolled into one? In our home, a burrito is always served with refried beans and cheese. Sometimes it has rice too. Whenever I personally have a hotdog, I prefer the hotdog to be prepared with barbecue sauce, so that’s exactly what I did. Finally, a taquito is fried until crispy, but I got better results with a grill. That’s how it all came together!
Speaking of refried beans, for this recipe, I used Bush’s® Refried Beans. I’m relatively new to Bush’s® brand of refried beans, because they’re new to Canada, but now it’s the only brand you’ll find stocked in our pantry. They’re very delicious, and I love the creamy texture of them.
To be honest, I think refried beans are not used enough in everyday cooking. Sure, we all smear them onto burritos, tostadas, enchiladas, and now taquitos! But, did you know you can make a delicious black bean soup with Bush’s® Refried Beans? They’re also really good in layered dips and especially good as a layer in a vegetarian lasagna!

IS IT A HOTDOG, A BURRITO, A TAQUITO, OR ALL THREE?
When I thought about combining my love of burritos, hotdogs, and taquitos into one delicious recipe, I didn’t think twice about which refried beans to use – it had to be Bush’s® for this family! Whenever I find a brand that I trust to taste good every single time, it takes the guesswork out of grocery shopping.
Now, let’s be honest here, I’m probably going to get a few comments from taquito purists. But, in my defence, I’m not saying that my Beans and Cheese Hotdog Taquito is authentic or better than the original. What I’m saying is that life is too short to not have your taquito (and your hotdog/burrito!) just the way you like it!
I wanted to create a taquito that was visually appealing; one that had simple, inexpensive ingredients, and one that would satisfy all of my cravings. Let me tell you how I made it!

LET ME TELL YOU HOW I MADE IT!
First things first, I had to prepare the hotdogs. I pan-fried the hotdogs over a low heat in a little bit of butter. I didn’t brown them too much; they’re just heated all the way through. Next, I pour over my favourite barbeque sauce and moved the hotdogs about until they were generously coated.
Building the taquito is easy and it starts with a soft tortilla. I bought the smaller tortillas, because I wanted it to just cover the hotdog and not have too much excess on either side. Next, I smeared half of the tortilla liberally with Bush’s® Refried Beans, followed by a sprinkling of shredded cheddar cheese. Then, I rolled the tortillas up firmly and grilled them until the cheese was melted, and the tortilla was toasted and crispy, and had those beautiful grill marks.
You want to know how it tastes? It tastes amazing, of course! Since there are so few ingredients, you will want to use the best you can. I think all tortillas are pretty much the same, but I did opt for our favourite brand of hotdogs, and of course, Bush’s® Refried Beans. You can use your favourite type of barbecue sauce. I usually make my own, so that’s what I used. Once all is said and done, you just need to serve them up while they’re still hot and the inside is smooth, creamy, and gooey with that refried bean and cheese mixture. Yum!
BUSH’S® BAKED BEANS
Because Bush’s® is a premium canned bean product, the flavour and the texture of the beans was the right choice for my Bean and Cheese Hotdog Taquitos. There’s a reason this family-owned company has been in business for over 110 years! As you can see, I used the refried black beans, but these would be great with the traditional refried beans too! Bush’s® has several other great canned bean flavours, such as Brown Sugar Hickory, Maple Style, and Sweet & Tangy too. All of those flavours would work very well in this recipe.
Bush’s® has been available in Canada for a few years now, and I’m so happy to see that they now offer refried beans too. If you want to learn more about Bush’s, please be sure to take a look at their Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages, as well as on bushbeans.ca.

HERE’S WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Let’s get back to the recipe! Here is what you will need to make these delicious and fun Bean and Cheese Hotdog Taquitos:
- Tortillas – Use the small variety so that there’s not too much of the tortilla sticking out of both ends. I used white, but you can use whole wheat or any flavour you prefer.
- Butter – This is used to pan-fry the hotdogs. I love the flavour that butter adds to fried meat products.
- Barbecue Sauce – To fully coat 12 hotdogs, I used a generous quarter cup. The sauce adds a smoky flavour, along with a bit of spiciness. Both of these are characteristics of a taquito.
- Bush’s® Refried Black Beans – I used two whole cans to prepare 12 taquitos. There’s no need to heat the refried beans first, they will heat through on the grill.
- Cheese – In my family, we love cheddar cheese, so that’s exactly what I used. You can use any shredded cheese your family prefers.

SO, ARE YOU HUNGRY?
Now, because man cannot live on taquitos alone, I’m going to offer up a few serving suggestions. The first thing you’ll want to do is decide whether or not you’ll serve your taquitos with dippers. I served these with salsa, sour cream, and guacamole. They’re the traditional condiments used with burritos and taquitos.
For the sides, I chose to serve a Mexican-inspired potato salad. I prepared it with corn, black beans, bell peppers, and jalapenos, with mayonnaise and sour cream dressing. It’s flavoured with salt and pepper, as well as a bit of garlic powder, onion powder, coriander, and cumin.
The corn dish you see in the photos is prepared by frying diced red onion and frozen corn with some butter in a skillet. Stir in finely diced red and green pepper. Season with salt, and pepper. It’s that easy! Now, wasn’t that an easy and delicious dinner idea?

Bean and Cheese Hotdog Taquitos
Ingredients
- 12 small tortillas
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 12 whole hotdogs
- 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
- 2 cans Bush’s® Refried Black Beans
- 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a large skillet, over medium heat. Add the hotdogs and cook, turning occasionally, until hotdogs are heated through. This will take about 5-7 minutes. Turn off heat and pour over the barbecue sauce. Move hotdogs around with tongs until each one is completely covered with the sauce. Set aside until ready to use.
- Working with one tortilla at a time, lay one flat on a cutting board.
- Liberally smear half of the tortilla with Bush’s® Refried Black Beans. Two heaping tablespoons will do just fine.
- Top the fried black beans with a prepared hotdog.
- Sprinkle over 1/4 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
- Starting from the bean and cheese side of the tortilla, roll the hotdog, cheese and bean mixture firmly into a log. Set aside, seam side down.
- Continue these steps until all 12 of the tortillas are rolled and prepared.
- Using a grill or panini press, grill the taquitos until the tortillas are golden brown and the cheese is all melted.
- Serve with salsa, guacamole, and sour cream. Enjoy!
