In less than 5 minutes, this at-home copycat version of Starbuck’s popular Green Tea Frappuccino could be all yours. Think about it – no line up, no drive thru, and no putting on pants to go out! That’s all the reason I need!
I’m sharing this Starbucks Copycat Green Tea Frappuccino with you in hopes that I will talk myself into making them at home more often. Let me explain. My very first frozen drink from Starbucks was the Green Tea Frappuccino. I remember it well!
At the time, I was running my department at the office by myself and I needed help. I spoke with my boss and he gave me the green light to hire a friend of mine to help me get caught up. One summer day, she left the office to go have lunch. When she returned, she had us both a green tea frap. I’ve been in love with them ever since.
I have to thank my friend, Deana, for introducing me to this addiction. I’m serious – it’s a full on addiction for me! Before she got married in California and became a momma to two beautiful kids, she was living in Toronto. I think this was in 2006 or 2007. So, since then, I’ve been sipping on a green tea frap every chance I get.
Two years ago, we bought a house outside the city. When the first lockdown happened, we decided to spend our time at the house instead of our Toronto apartment. As hard as it was to get through each pandemic-related lockdown, it was having everything close by that was the hardest to deal with. Over a year later, we still spend most of our time at the house, and the closest Starbucks is just over 30 minutes drive.
WE GET OUR FIX
John.e is not a fan of fraps. And, he doesn’t drink coffee, so being so far from a Starbucks location doesn’t affect him at all. McKenna, on the other hand, can live off Starbucks’ Caramel Frappuccino. So, whenever we go into town for groceries, we get a frap. Whenever we go for a doctor’s appointment, or to see the optometrist, we get a frap.
When John.e runs into town to look at a lawn tractor or to fetch a bag of cover seed from TSC, he brings us home a frap. Any excuse we can find to get into town, we’re on it! “I need a glue stick. Let’s go to town. We can get Starbucks!” That’s an example of how many excursions to town will start.
By the way, John.e doesn’t go away empty-handed. He used to love their peach drink, but it was discontinued. Now, he’s addicted to their chocolate chip cookies. They’re great, but I still prefer my Jumbo Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies over anything store-bought.
WITHDRAWAL
So, if I’m being honest here, I should start by saying that I’m a responsible adult. I don’t love the idea of wasting gas money just to get a Starbucks. It was time to make my own. I have seen versions of copycat Starbucks menu items online for years, but had never tried to recreate my Green Tea Frap.
I always have green tea powder on hand, so how hard could it be? In the many times that I’ve been waiting in line for my frap to be ready, I have paid attention to the barista. Into the blender goes matcha (green tea powder), ice, milk, and a few pumps of syrup, which I figured was just sugar anyway. So, I did it. I blended it all together and topped it with lots of whipped cream. It looked right, but it didn’t taste right.
After some experimentation, I was able to determine what was missing. Can you guess what it was? I really can’t believe that it was so simple, but made such a huge difference. I won’t tease you. It was vanilla extract. Yep, just a wee drop, made a world of difference. Now, are you ready to whip one up at home? Let’s get to it!
