Choose your base, choose your drizzle colours, and choose your sprinkles. Perfect for kids, but great for adults who like to play with their food too!
The possibilities are endless when it comes to decorating Rice Krispie Treat Popsicles! As you can see, I choose to drizzle the popsicles with blue and pink melted candy and topped them with sprinkles. These are so much fun to make and even more fun to eat! Easily transform plain Rice Krispie Treats into a beautiful, cheerful, Easter treat!
I took these a step further and bought some inexpensive cellophane bags from Micheals and placed one popsicle into each bag. I tied them up with plain kitchen string to keep them looking rustic and homemade. You can certainly use festive, Easter-themed ribbon too!

INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO PREPARE THIS RECIPE
The following is a list of the ingredients needed to prepare this recipe. For exact amounts and measurements, refer to the printable recipe card located near the bottom of this post.
- Rice Krispie Treats – You will need 16 store-bought, individually wrapped Rice Krispie Treats. I’m using the 22 grams size, but you can use a larger size. Any smaller than 22 grams will be difficult to work with, especially when trying to insert the stick.
- Candy Melts – See the section below. Sometimes they are called melting wafers.
- Coconut Oil – This is used to thin the melted candy melts. You can use vegetable oil if you don’t have coconut oil.
- Sprinkles – Your favourite themed sprinkles here!
- Popsicle Sticks – These wooden sticks can be found at dollar stores, craft stores, or online here.
- Cellophane Bags – I found mine at Michaels, but you can get them online here. They are a bit too long, but you can easily cut off an inch or so from the opening.
- Egg Carton – An empty, upside-down egg carton will keep the popsicles upright until the melted candy melts harden.
- String – To tie up the cellophane bags.
WHAT ARE CANDY MELTS?
Candy melts are small, round discs that are made to emulate white chocolate. They come in a wide range of colours and are usually melted down and used in confections such as the coating on cake pops. I think the term candy melts is owned by Wilton, which is the only type I’ll use.
I use Wilton’s because I have used the brand many times before and have never been disappointed, but also because they have a lot of different colours to choose from. Oh, and the price is always good too!
If you cannot find candy melts, you can either order them online here, or you can use generic brands that can be found at your local baking supply store. The generic brands and sometimes called melting wafers. As you can see, I used pink and blue.
LET’S TALK SPRINKLES!
Where do you buy sprinkles? Do you have a favourite vendor or brand? A few Christmases back, I changed my sprinkle game. I would always buy sprinkles from the baking supply section at Bulk Barn, but not anymore – no way! Let me tell you how this all went down.
In November 2018, I was baking a few Christmas goodies and just could not source sprinkles that looked anything like what I was imagining in my head. John.e was on a major sprinkle hunt. He used to work in close proximity to Michael’s, HomeSense, Winners, and Marshall’s. He purchased at least ten different sprinkle colours, shapes, and brands. But, I wasn’t impressed with any of them as much as I was with Sweetapolita.
After Christmas, I needed Valentine’s sprinkles, so I tracked down the brand and found their online store. I ordered enough sprinkles to last a lifetime! Shopping for sprinkles online might seem a little over the top, but I’ve never once pretended to shy away from getting what I want!
For these Rice Krispie Treat Popsicles, you can use any sprinkles really, but I do find that the smaller sprinkles work best. The elongated shape – like a miniature rod – they’re usually called Jimmies. Those are what I used, but you can use nonpareils (small balls) as well. The popsicle will look better with smaller sprinkles.
HOW TO SET UP YOUR EGG CARTON
Depending on how many of these Rice Krispie Treat Popsicles you make, you might need several empty egg cartons. We usually buy eggs in the 18-pack, so I only needed one. Remove the lid from the egg carton so that you are left with only the bottom part. Turn it upside down and place it onto a cutting board.
You will need to puncture the top of each inverted egg holder. To do this, use the tip of a small, sharp knife. You will only need to put in small punctures – just a slit. It’s nearly impossible to push the popsicle stick through the egg carton without having a hole started first.
When transferring the finished popsicles to the egg carton, be sure to load up the carton from end to end, meaning place one popsicle at one end and then a second at the other end. Working back and forth like that you will balance out the weight being loaded onto the carton and will prevent it from toppling over.
HOW TO MAKE RICE KRISPIE TREAT POPSICLES
I’m going to walk you through this in steps. Yes, it’s quite easy, but I want you to have a very successful go at these. There’s a lot of room for error or mishaps, so bear with me while I guide you through it.
Step 1 – Shaping the Popsicles
Working with one individually wrapped Rice Krispie Treat at a time, unwrap it and place it flat on a cutting board. Use a knife to cut off the upper corners. (These pieces are discarded, so feel free to pop them into your mouth!) Using the cutting board as a flat, hard surface, pick up the treat and gently round out the upper edges so that they are rounded out. Push the treat into the cutting board and roll it to round out the top. Next, lay the treat flat on the cutting board and with one palm placed on top of the treat, gently, but firmly, push the popsicle stick into the treat.
Step 2: Decorating the Popsicles
Once you have selected the colour of your preferred candy melt, transfer one cup of the candy melts to a microwave-safe bowl. Add 1/4 teaspoon of vegetable oil or coconut oil. Microwave the candy melts in 15-second increments, stirring well between each increment. When completely smooth, transfer to a Ziploc bag and cut off the tip.
Holding one popsicle at a time, drizzle the melted candy melts in a zig-zag pattern on one side. Turn over the popsicle and repeat the drizzle on the other side. Holding the popsicle over the bowl of sprinkles, top each side with sprinkles, allowing the excess to fall back into the bowl.
Transfer the decorated popsicle to the egg carton. Carefully push the popsicle stick into one of the pre-punched holes. Push the stick down into the carton until it touches the cutting board under the egg carton. Move on to the next popsicle. Repeat until all Rice Krispie Treat Popsicles are decorated.
Step 3: Drying and Packaging
Once melted, candy melts do not take long at all to re-harden. Set the egg carton aside while you clean up the mess. By the time you’re finished, the popsicles should be ready to package. Insert the popsicles into a cellophane bag and tie string or ribbon tightly around the stick end.
Lord Byron’s Notes
Even if you don’t have cellophane bags to package your finished popsicles into, and even if you don’t plan to distribute them later, you will still need to wrap them individually. This will prevent them from getting stale and also will prevent them from sticking to each other. You can use plastic wrap if you don’t have cellophane.
Packaged popsicles should be stored in a large Ziploc bag or a large container with a tight-fitting lid. This will keep the treats tasting fresh and will prevent them from drying out. Do not refrigerate! If you do, during the thawing process, condensation will form on the inside of the cellophane bags and will turn your beautiful creation into a sloppy mess!
MAKE YOUR OWN RICE KRISPIE TREATS
I have a recipe here for homemade Rice Krispie Treats that you can cut out with your favourite cookie-cutter shapes. If you don’t care for forming store-bought treats into a popsicle shape, how about using cookie cutters to make hearts, eggs, bunny ears, or any shape you like!
If you take a look at my Cookie Cutter Rice Krispie Treats, you will note that for those, I did not use any drizzle on them. When making the treats, I added the sprinkles while the marshmallow was still soft and gooey!
