The combination of a sweet and smoky barbecue sauce with jarred peach preserves is the perfect addition to accompany these oven-baked ham steaks. Add some garlic, onion, and a little ground black pepper to round out the flavours and you’ve got a very delicious family-style recipe for tonight’s dinner!

I am completely in love with the taste of this ham! Normally, I find ham to be a bit too salty for my tastes. But, this one is not, because is it baked and basted in a homemade glaze. The smoky-sweet barbecue sauce and the delicate sweetness of the peach preserves help to remove some of the saltiness that we are all too familiar with when it comes to ham. Barbecue Peach Ham Steaks just might be my favourite way to prepare ham!
This recipe is quite easy to follow and shouldn’t be intimidating at all. In fact, once the ham steaks are baking, you can go ahead and prepare your side dishes. The ham requires very little attention. Essentially, all you have to do is set it in the oven, flip it, and baste it with sauce a few times. So, if you’re so inclined, you can make those sides extra special, because you’ll have some free time on your hands!

OTTAWA VALLEY MEATS
For this particular recipe, I am using three ham steaks from Ottawa Valley Meats. Like all of their products, their ham is completely antibiotic and hormone-free and provided a diet consisting of vegetable feed with no soy products. Their delicious and juicy ham is handcrafted in Ontario. Personally, I think these ham steaks would be a great option for smaller families who might not need a larger ham at Christmastime or Easter.
If you are in Ontario, be sure to look into Ottawa Valley Meats to see if they deliver to your area. They offer seafood, poultry, and pork too. And, they deliver right to your door! I have had other suppliers deliver meat and seafood, but Ottawa Valley Meats was the best! It comes in a freezer-refrigerated truck, which means the box doesn’t need to be stuffed with ice packs or dry ice. And, the food doesn’t need to be packaged into those silver cooler bags. Do you know what that means for me? Less waste!

BARBECUE SAUCE AND PEACH PRESERVES TOGETHER?
Barbecue Peach Ham Steaks is the perfect main for a busy weeknight dinner. After all, the only thing you need to do is combine two ingredients with a few seasonings and bake. Every fifteen minutes, you will flip the ham steaks over and baste them with the sauce mixture. In less than an hour, you’ll have this delicious ham steak ready to enjoy. It really could not get any easier than that!
I love the combination of the smokiness and sweetness from the barbecue sauce, especially when it’s paired with the delicate sweetness of the peach preserves. You can obviously use whichever brands you prefer, and you can use whichever flavours you prefer as well. I used my homemade jam because I just happened to have a jar of homemade peach jam on hand. For the barbecue sauce, I used my favourite store brand of barbeque sauce. If you prefer, you can use a hot and spicy barbeque sauce or stick with a basic flavour as I did.
I think this dish is best served with a very simple side. Even though the flavour of the sauce is not complex, the end result is a very flavourful, tasty dish. It’s got every element you’d like in a main. It’s sweet and smoky, it’s saucy and sticky, and it’s hearty and wholesome. That’s why I opted to serve the ham with two of my favourite veggies – corn and asparagus.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO PREPARE THIS RECIPE
The following is a list of the ingredients needed to prepare this recipe. For exact amounts and measurements, refer to the printable recipe card located near the bottom of this post.
- Ham Steaks – I used three ham steaks which would serve just three people, or more depending on the size of the steaks. Ham steaks vary in size and thickness. Try to use ham steaks that are about 1/4 inch thick and weigh about 8 ounces.
- Barbecue Sauce – Use your favourite barbecue sauce. Don’t be afraid to use a spicy and smoky sauce; the peach preserves will mellow out those strong flavours.
- Peach Preserves – Peach preserves or peach jam will work. I like preserves or jam with some chunks of fruit left in it. It adds texture!
- Ground Black Pepper
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder

HOW TO MAKE BARBECUE PEACH HAM STEAKS
Begin by preheating your oven to 400 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking pan with two layers of aluminium foil. Trust me, you will thank me later when it’s time to clean up the dishes. The sugar content in both the barbecue sauce and the peach preserves will caramelize while the ham steaks are baking. The caramelized sugar will stick to the pan, so lining the pan with foil will make cleaning up a breeze!
While the oven preheats, pat the ham steaks dry with paper towels. Place them in a single layer onto the prepared baking pan. Pop them into the oven and bake for 15 minutes. In the meantime, measure the sauce ingredients (barbecue sauce, peach preserves, ground black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder) into a bowl and whisk to combine.
After the 15 minutes are up, remove the baking pan from the oven and turn the ham steaks over. Baste the steaks with a third of the sauce. Return them to the oven and bake for 10 more minutes. Once again, remove them from the oven and flip the steaks. Baste with another third of the sauce and bake for another 10 minutes. Flip and baste once more, baking for the final 10 minutes. Remove the ham steaks from the oven one last time; plate, garnish, and enjoy!

SERVING SUGGESTIONS:
I’m one of those people who feel that a meal isn’t complete without sides. And, to be honest, it’s the biggest thing I struggle with. I have no issues whatsoever with deciding on the main dish, but preparing sides is not something I enjoy much at all.
Since I do 99% of the cooking, I feel that I should make the decisions. Ha! But, because I want everyone else to be happy too, the side dish struggle creeps in. I grew up eating carb-filled sides, so those are what I gravitate toward. As you know, John.e is a vegetarian who wants broccoli with every meal, but since he was not eating any of these ham steaks, I got to choose the sides!
There are two sides that I can eat with just about everything. Those two sides are corn and asparagus. They are my favourite veggies and I can eat them every day and never grow tired of them. With the bold flavour of these Barbecue Peach Ham Steaks, I wanted to go simple, yet flavourful. Here’s my Grilled Corn recipe. While the corn was on the grill, I tossed my asparagus with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and quickly grilled that as well.
